Even the small things help. Maybe a sentence that you have heard a lot when we want to fight for something. With the new TikTok term ‘’micro-feminism’’ TikTok creators share their way of having a small, everyday contribution to fight against sexism and gender inequality. Even if it seems small it can have a big impact. In a funny but serious way, women use short videos to show what they do to challenge sexism, often in everyday situations and especially in the workplace. Inspired by this trend, we have listed micro-feminist actions that you can easily apply in your own life, because even the small things can make a change.
- Stand up for other women. Maybe one of the most important ones, but stand up for other (younger) women. Especially when they are interrupted, talked over or not taken seriously. Whether at school, work or in social situations.
- Need a picture of a doctor, lawyer or construction worker? Use a picture of a women. These professions are still often associated with men, while many women work in these fields as well. Showing women in leadership roles, higher educated jobs and male- dominated professions, you help girls see that they have the same opportunities and dream within reach. Representation matters!
- Do not smile/laugh at inappropriate jokes men make. Sexist jokes are often brushed off as ‘’ just a joke’’, but that joke can have impact on women. By not laughing and setting boundaries, you will send a clear message.
- Address a woman first. Need to write something to multiple persons? Address the women first. It may seem small, but it helps the unconscious habit of always placing men first.
- Clarify the gender of sports team. When talking about sports, be specific. Instead of saying ‘’ the football team’’, say the women’s football team or the men’s football team. This will prevent the automatic assumption that sports always mean men’s sports and it gives women athletes the recognition they deserve.
- Use gender-neutral job titles. Instead of fireman, policemen, use fire fighter and polices officers. It shows that anyone can fit into these roles, regardless of gender.
- Hold dads accountable. Do not praise a dad for ‘’babysitting’’. He is taking care of his child, like he should be doing. Avoid praising dads for doing what should be normal, and help normalize equal responsibility in parenting.
- Give credit where it’s due. If a woman’s idea is ignored or taken over by someone else, repeat it and mention her name. This will make her contribution visible and valued.
- Challenge stereotypes. When you hear comments like ‘’ women are bad at…’’ question them. Just ask ‘’Why do you think that?” can open important conversations.
- Stop saying sorry. You are allowed to have an opinion, to speak and to take up space. Stop apologizing for existing, talking or sharing your ideas.
Micro-feminism shows that you do not need big actions to make a difference. Small, everyday choices can slowly change the way people think, speak and act. By becoming more aware and making small adjustments in our daily lives, we can create more respectful and equal environments for everyone. Change starts with awareness.
